An ITIN, or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, is issued by the Internal Revenue Service to help individuals comply with U.S. tax laws and provide a means to efficiently process and account for tax returns and payments for those not eligible for Social Security Numbers. It is a nine-digit number formatted similarly to a Social Security Number (SSN).
Unlike an SSN, an ITIN does not authorize work in the United States nor entitle the holder to Social Security benefits. Its sole purpose is to facilitate tax administration and reporting.
Key points to remember:
- ITINs are used for tax purposes only.
- They are issued to individuals who cannot obtain SSNs.
- ITINs do not grant work authorization or eligibility for government benefits.
