Sisters-in-law Griselda Silva and Maria de Leon are the co-owners of Tamales y Antojitos la Promesa, serving tamales and other traditional Mexican food in Fresno, California. Griselda and Maria immigrated with their families to the United States in 2004 from Salamanca, Guanajuato, Mexico.
In August of 2020 Griselda and Maria lost their jobs due to COVID-19 and needed to find a way to provide for their families, so they decided to turn to what they know best: food. Using their experience owning a restaurant in Mexico, they started making tamales and began selling to friends and family. Their tamales quickly gained popularity and Griselda and Maria decided to set up a pop-up shop on a busy street corner in Fresno. Today, they have a loyal customer base and have expanded into a catering company, providing traditional Mexican food made with natural ingredients.
For Griselda and Maria, the best part of owning their business is the relationships they have built with their customers, as many clients have turned into friends. They are proud that their hard work is paying off and it’s helping them accomplish their dreams. Griselda and Maria want to pay it forward by providing jobs to their community. Their dream is to open a family restaurant and serve wholesome Mexican food at affordable prices.
